O futebol é um esporte inventado para que o gol seja quase impossível. Entre uma trave e outra apenas 7,32m de largura. Altura? Somente 2,44m. O campo tem mais de 100m de comprimento e aproximadamente 65m de largura. Os jogadores, quando atacam, só fazem o gol se a bola for dirigida a esse pequeno espaço de 7,32m, com 6, 7, 8 defensores na frente dela, mais o goleiro, que, ainda por cima, pode usar as mãos. Quanto aos defensores, podem chutar a bola para qualquer direção, exceto aos 7,32m entre as traves. A vantagem dos defensores é ampla. Além disso, existe a tal regra do impedimento, uma desgraça que anula boa parte dos gols obtidos a duras penas. Quem nunca jogou futebol não faz ideia do cansaço produzido em cada jogada. E quando essa energia não pode ser extravasada em comemoração do gol, explode em choros, gritos, agressões, palavrões. Foi diante do gol que assisti, pela primeira vez, anos e anos atrás, homens se abraçando, se beijando e chorando. Nunca vi tantos homens, que jamais admitiriam certos contatos com outros homens em outras situações, se tocando. Assisti a alguns dos mais bárbaros encontros entre homens no estádio e fora deles, mas também assisti aos mais esperançosos sinais de humanidade durante os jogos. E tudo porque o gol, no jogo de futebol, é quase impossível. E é isso, acredito, que o torna mais apaixonante que qualquer outro esporte.
