Os três gols naturalmente ocuparam as manchetes. Mas, ao observar a partida com mais atenção, talvez o aspecto mais interessante não tenha sido a quantidade de gols marcados, e sim a maneira como Messi parecia se relacionar com tudo o que acontecia ao seu redor.
Em reflexões anteriores publicadas na Universidade do Futebol, procurei discutir como a performance esportiva não pode ser compreendida apenas a partir de variáveis físicas, técnicas ou táticas. O rendimento emerge da interação constante entre percepção, tomada de decisão, emoção e comportamento dentro de um contexto específico.
Sob essa perspectiva, a atuação de Lionel Messi diante da Argélia oferece uma oportunidade interessante para refletirmos sobre um conceito amplamente estudado na psicologia da performance: o estado de Flow.
Desenvolvido por Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, o conceito descreve um estado de profunda imersão na tarefa, no qual atenção, ação e percepção parecem funcionar de maneira altamente integrada. Nesses momentos, o atleta tende a apresentar elevada concentração, sensação de controle, clareza sobre os objetivos da tarefa e uma relação quase total com as demandas do presente.
Para o autor, o Flow tende a emergir quando existe um equilíbrio adequado entre o desafio apresentado pela atividade e a capacidade percebida pelo indivíduo para enfrentá-lo. Quando isso acontece, a atenção deixa de estar voltada para fatores externos e passa a concentrar-se integralmente na execução.
Ao observar Messi durante a partida, é difícil não enxergar diversos elementos compatíveis com esse estado.
Enquanto milhões de pessoas assistiam ao jogo pensando no peso histórico daquela Copa do Mundo, Messi parecia preocupado apenas com a próxima ação.
Enquanto torcedores e jornalistas discutiam legado, títulos e recordes, ele parecia concentrado apenas nas informações produzidas pelo próprio jogo.
Essa talvez tenha sido a principal impressão transmitida por sua atuação.
Messi parecia completamente conectado ao presente.
Seus deslocamentos surgiam no momento adequado. Suas decisões aconteciam com naturalidade. Seus movimentos pareciam econômicos, precisos e funcionais. Em diversos momentos, a sensação era de que ele antecipava situações antes mesmo que elas se tornassem evidentes para os demais jogadores em campo.
Sob a ótica da teoria do Flow, isso faz bastante sentido.
Uma das características mais marcantes desse estado é justamente a redução da interferência de estímulos externos na execução da tarefa. O atleta deixa de direcionar sua atenção para consequências futuras e passa a concentrar seus recursos atencionais naquilo que está acontecendo naquele instante.
O foco deixa de ser o resultado, a crítica, a repercussão ou a classificação. O foco passa a ser a próxima decisão, o próximo espaço e a próxima ação.
E talvez seja exatamente isso que observamos em muitos dos grandes momentos da carreira de Messi.
Ao longo da partida contra a Argélia, não parecia existir qualquer conflito entre percepção e ação. As respostas surgiam rapidamente, os comportamentos pareciam fluidos e a relação entre o jogador e o contexto do jogo acontecia de maneira quase orgânica.
É justamente essa fluidez que levou Csikszentmihalyi a utilizar a palavra “Flow”. A experiência subjetiva de estar tão conectado à tarefa que a ação parece simplesmente fluir.
Talvez o grande desafio de uma Copa do Mundo não seja apenas técnico, físico ou tático.
Talvez seja atencional.
A Copa do Mundo produz um ambiente capaz de retirar constantemente o atleta do presente. A responsabilidade de representar um país, a pressão da torcida, a cobertura da imprensa e a importância histórica de cada partida empurram o jogador para aquilo que pode acontecer.
Mas o desempenho acontece no agora.
E talvez seja justamente por isso que o conceito de Flow seja tão relevante para compreender performances excepcionais.
Os grandes jogadores não necessariamente são aqueles que ignoram a pressão.
Muitas vezes são aqueles que conseguem permanecer conectados à tarefa apesar dela.
Ao observar Messi contra a Argélia, a sensação era justamente essa.
Não parecia um jogador tentando construir um legado.
Não parecia um jogador preocupado com a repercussão do jogo.
Parecia apenas um jogador completamente conectado ao futebol.
E talvez seja exatamente nesse ponto que algumas das maiores performances esportivas conseguem emergir.
Porque, no fim, o futebol continua sendo um jogo de percepção, decisão e ação. E quando essas três dimensões conseguem funcionar em perfeita sintonia, aquilo que chamamos de performance muitas vezes passa a parecer algo simples.
Mesmo quando está sendo realizado por um dos maiores jogadores da história em uma Copa do Mundo.
